...really reading the above comments - sometimes things don't need to get that complicated ;-)

I know this topic comes up periodically, but I did have some questions on Rachel's data. (or, more recent data, of course!) Of the posting errors that are detected, what percentage of those are from new users, vs. veteran users? I ask this specifically because I have seen an example from Seeking Alpha that may be interesting to copy. Seeking Alpha is an investing website, and tries not only to fight spam but also to bring credible posts. (they actually pay a small amount for posts with large views--but that's not what I am looking to copy)

The thing that caught my interest was that my posts (replies to other articles) also experienced a delay, similar to the lean forum. Eventually, though, my posts appeared immediately. Apparently, I met a threshold where I was "credible," or at least not a spam bot, and no longer subject to pre-editing. This was a very low threshold--something around 5 posts. I don't know what is possible with your forum platform, but perhaps this is a balance to allow your experienced users the freedom they want, while assisting new people to the forum, and saving us all from the day a spammer finds their way here.
