Hi Dave - As the President and 5S Expert from The 5S Store, I can say that I have never heard of 2S for Safety. I'd be interested in any further information that you come across.

Best of luck,

Hi Dave

I asked a friend who is a safety consultant, he has never heard of any such program. The only thing he could think of was safety and security, which is taken as first dealing with what needs to be done to create a safe workplace, and second what measures need to be taken in order to secure the safety measures in the workplace. Though he hates the use on acronyms especially when it comes to safety issues as they do nothing, but cause confusion.

I would suggest asking them to explain what it is, and then finding the right information about the topic, and avoiding fancy new smoked screen programs.

Good Luck

Thanks guys. I will try and dig a little deeper with the supplier who mentioned it. Its good to hear that I am not the only one stumped! I'm sure its a different name for something we already know.

This is part of the problem when companies start making up things to call stuff so they can put their own spin on it and claim that they "invented" it.

If I tried that my Senseis would fire me.

When the 5S's became popular, someone, or some company, decided to add two more S's. For example, this scheme showed up:

The Contents of 7S include:
.1S ---- SORT
classify the articles as used and unused, and treat well the unused ones.
.2S ---- STRAIGHTEN
after arrangement, the necessary articles are reclassified and put in order.
.3S ---- SWEEP
wipe out the dirt and ensure clean operation workplace
.4S ---- SANITARY
standardize the above 3s
.5S ---- SENTIMENT
improve the quality of staffs and standardize staff behavior and promote good habits.
.6S ---- SAVEING
better utilize the time, space and resources to maximize the use, creating a highly efficient workplace.
.7S ---- SAFETY
remove risks to ensure both human safety and product quality safety, prevent further accidents.

Could the two S's be in reference to the two that was added, namely Saveing and Safety?

Hi Sam

I am bit confuse about the additional 2S as you have mention "6S Saveing and 7S Safety". I think the 5S already address Saving and Safety issue.

I think the 5S: 1S Sort and 2S Straighten is all to do with saving and 3S Sweep is to do with (in short) health and safety.

I don't understand why need additional 2S?

I think you'll find that the original Toyota process actually only had 4 S's. (The current 4th and 5th S's were combined.) As usual, everybody had to complicate a relatively simple system. I kind of like just having four.

Kwok-wo, the scheme that showed two more S's was in an article I found on the Internet. I don't know the reason why the person that wrote the article decided there should be two more Ss. If memory serves me correctly, other people have identified additional S's to add to the five. I don't remember what they stood for however. I thought these S's that might explain where the "Two S's" statement came from. Perhaps I'm wrong.

David I do not know how old this post is but what I have been experiencing is that 5s is no longer 5s but actually 7s SORT, STRAIGHTEN ,SHINE, STADARDIZE, SUSTAIN, SAFETY, SECURITY

2S?
I worked in at Flowserve for a couple of years. Their shops are 6S with Safety as the 1st, then the traditional 5.

Tom
You are correct. I was not aware of 5Ss until after leaving Toyota. The 5th S is the dicipline. One of my old Toyota Sensei's always joked about the add. He asked if it was important to do 4Ss why was it necessary to add the 5th as dicipline? I could only respond that it was the American way. Safety is included in the 4Ss. To and a sixth is similar to adding the fifth.

A safety program is much more extensive than adding an S. In addition to ergonomics it requires knowledge of all existing laws, rules and regulations, handling of hazardous materials, keeping score - Safety Green Cross and accident metrics and problem solving to find root cause of injuries and accidents. Management has to set the example on establishing the culture for safety. It is also good to have a simple brochure for visitors on safety behavoir requirements.
