The 2 books that I could reference on the subject would be Ronald Mascitelli's Mastering Lean Product Development and Allan Coletta's The Lean 3P Advantage.
Ronald's book does not go into as much depth on 3P as Alan does but it is very well written and covers a little more ground outside of 3P.
Shameless Plug: Both are scheduled to have a podcast with me and would welcome any questions you might have of them.

I have a basic PowerPoint presentation that I've tried to develop from opportunities to learn from others, but one of the best I know at teaching the process is Mike Wroblewski, formerly of Batesville Casket, now N.A. Director of Kaizen Institute. You can find him on LinkedIn, or at his personal website - gotboondoggle[dot]com.

Randy,
3P is one of many possible solutions to your problem, but most organizations typically apply it "on top" of their existing product development process (or even just conduct a 3P workshop) and that has many drawbacks. In my experience, it has always been more effective to integrate lean process design into the overall product design process so that the best overall solution is developed from day 1. Product development isn't just about creating a new design - it's about creating a new value stream. It sounds like you have a separate process design phase and that usually creates many problems. 3P may be able to help, but please take the time to understand what the real root causes of your problems are before jumping to a solution.

I purchased Alan's book yesterday, good advice. This is one area of lean that has very little written about it. Makes me wonder why,so I will try to learn all I can.
Thanks
