I am getting ready to make a career move from a high-volume and relatively repeatable manufacturing process to something much closer to a job shop. I have had good success in implementing lean ideas and tools up until now, but job shops can be a whole different animal.
What books have you found helpful on implementing lean and running a job shop?

"Creating Mixed Model Value Streams" by Kevin Duggan is a good introduction to high mix, low volume lean. When you get to true job shops, it's challenging because of the lack of repeatability. You can take many of the standard lean principles and apply them but you'll have to be creative for how to handle increasing amounts of variation.

Concerning Lean in job shops, you may read the books:

1). Made-to-Order Lean: Excelling in a High-Mix, Low-Volume Environment by Greg Lane
2). Creating Mixed Model Value Streams: Practical Lean Techniques for Building to Demand by Kevin Duggan
3). Speed to Market: Lean Manufacturing for Job Shops by Vincent Bozzone.

A different perspective of job shops is given at www.optisol.biz (I work here). The idea is to find what best we can do with the existing set of production resources and later identify improvement opportunities based on prediction and what-if analysis of workflow.

Check out this website http://pfast.ise.ohio-state.edu/pfast/ which offers a variety of information. The "Teach JobshopLean" describes a teaching package that includes a JobshopLean Simulation game and recorded lectures on JobshopLean. You are right that "job shops can be a whole different animal". In general, there has been a tendency to ramrod Lean Thinking rather than do CLean Thinking i.e. treat a jobshop as a production system different from an assembly line, assess its real problems and then find answers to those problems.
