Just to let everyone know leaneconomics.org is up and running and the book has undergone some major changes and is 99% done.

Here is a sample from pg 1 and the lead in to the ideas discussed.

Today's understanding and goals of economic activity is flawed. Modern economics is not lean. A lean economy is supposed to "economize". The word economize means the preservation of resources, the efficienct use of resources and the reduction of waste. These are Lean activities, and must be the foundation of all economic acitivity. We must efficiently organize the materials for production and distribution of the life supporting goods on this planet, and create measures that promote those activities.

Today our economic measures are out of sync with a Lean economy. The planets resources are finite (limited), and took millions of years to develop, and we waste them at every step of the production cycle in order to maximize profits and boost GDP (Gross Domestic Product), and other flawed economic measures. Land fills and our oceans are full of vital resources that we have wasted. We do not take the time to recycle those resources because someone can't make a profit in this current economic system that promotes the waste of those resources. However we have the audacity to brag we are in the middle of a lean revolution. Not even close. The measures are all wrong and the results are not positive once you take an objective viewpoint to the health of our society. We are going backwards at the moment.

People are starving all over the world and we have all the resources to feed everyone. However this conflicts with current economic strategy. The scarcity of products drives up prices. The signals profit motive sends reinforce us to work subconsciously against our own survival. The less clean water, the more profits. The less oil, the higher the price. Profit motive promotes wasteful consumption in order to promote the modern definition of economic growth.

Look around and see what is going on. We ship products from China to the US. Products that can easily be produced in the US in order to maximize profits based on labor rates that have risen due to the keynesian economic theory of inflation. The oil used in the shipping of those products is completely wasted from a lean economic perspective. We can not get that oil back. This was not the most efficient use of that oil. Excess transportation is one of the seven deadly wastes of lean. However companies make profits off those activities due to our current economic structure. More pollution is created, and an immense amount of material wasted that could be used more efficiently to build other products to service society properly.

We are completely out of sync with the proper distribution of goods and services that will promote the cleanest and most efficient use of our finite resources in order to maximize the quality of our lives. We are not lean. We have not even started to discuss lean. The root cause to this problem is our monetary and banking system, which is based on Keynesian economics and promotes inflation.

I was recently at a conference speaking on Lean. Over lunches, I used some of what I read of your chapters in dialog with several other Lean speakers. It provided the basis to a continued discussion. To me, that is the best compliment I can give about any book - that it stimulates discussion.

I would encourage you to proceed. You've got nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Loved the "Supreme Commander of the Planet" title. Have you looked into Milton Hershey's story? I was moved and inspired by his focus on society's needs.

Kendrick,
Yes throughout history the many great entrepreneurs that earned their money thru hard work and creativity have given back and tried to create a better society, only to be blocked by special interests. True capitalism and lean will promote those activities.
Thanks for taking the time to read the book. I am glad you enjoyed it.
