Anyone has had the pleasure to implement lean in a medium sized physician's office?
These group has not been introduced to lean before, but are willing to participate.

What are some of the tools or strategy used to streamline their processes.

Thanks,

There's a book published by ASQ called "Lean Doctors" that gives a decent introduction to the topic.

I am a physician and have implemented Lean in several clinics. One key factor is to engage the physicians up front around expectations and their role in ensuring success. Be glad to correspond off line if you wish. Have a book in publication on Sustaining Lean through Physician Engagement. Probably be out around January.

Have also implemented Lean in numerous healthcare settings including clinics, but must say Dr Nelson is right on the nail when he said you must engage physicians early! Absolutely correct.

I learned my lesson during my early days of implementing Lean in healthcare. You certainly can't get results if the physicians arent backing you, BUT, that often takes a bit of finesse as well.

Lean initially feels like it goes against the grain in healthcare. Afterall, most are taught or trained to be autonomous and to succeed as an individual. This doesnt work in a team-driven Lean enterprise. But you must know how to get docs on board early and by engaging them I mean much more than just convincing them this is the best route.

Get physicians to help champion such a cause and you're more likely to succeed!

Hi Craig, Lean is a process originally developed for manufacturing by companies like Toyota and Alcoa, and it's now widely used in health care, especially hospitals. Focus is reducing waste (of time, materials, human effort, etc) to improve quality.

Here's an article I wrote some time ago for a local hospital about it:"Orthopedic practice uses unique approach to improve delivery of care."
