We've recently purchased iPads in our Quality department to assist us with mapping, measurements and data collection within our healthcare organization. We have projects going on in acute care, laboratory, emergency and pharmacy settings for example. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions about Apps that are available for tools such as:
Value stream mapping - or process mapping
Spaghetti diagrams
Data collection sheet creation
Steps/distance calculation
Notes
Any other suggestions about how you have used it or seen it used would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much!

Hi Erin, Great step forward. Who is getting an iPad in your workforce and who has to stick to pencil and paper?
I know of eKanban (have to check for the link).
Myself grown up in a lean-household (father electrical engineer) and worked all my life as a lean facilitator I love to put technology into life. Yet this makes only sense if the workforce itself is using it and the use decreases the work load significantly.
Glad to hear more.
Cheers, Ralf
PS.: Learned about your post via http://twitter.com/LeanBlog (MarkGraban)

This is absolutely not a step forward in the right direction I am afraid, having it on a pc or ipad will just hide it and also make the data unclear as you will need to find apps etc to accomodate.
Pencil, paper & lots of 'why' questions are the way forward, followed by learn by doing
I have to ask, who justifed an ipad and then asked what apps are available to be used????
You dont need fancy ipads to do spc, process flows or vsm, only a willingness, some common sense is all.
Worrying

I haven't seen a spaghetti diagram app. I could maybe see some value in being able to take a picture of a layout drawing and then draw a diagram... then email it out. If the app could calculate walking distance from your drawing, that might be pretty cool.
There's one website (www.designingkaizen.com) that claims to have an A3 app (but it's just for computers.... AND it just flat out doesn't work).
I'd second Benny's point that you don't NEED technology. It sounds like the iPad purchase does little more than increase our healthcare costs.

It's too bad you have received such negative comments in regards to the ipad. I'm the lean coordinator at my facility and I don't know what I would do without my ipad. I'm also the safety/risk coordinator. I'm constantly on the go and a laptop is just not handy when you don't have a place to set it down. The ipad has helped me with measurable time savings.
I use it primarily to be as mobile as possible to do my job. I also never have to double document. In our facility, I strongly encourage lean projects be done with pencil and paper but the final product is always electronic (I can explain that another time). The ipad is great for data collection, observation, note taking, and taking pictures and videos of current conditions. ipads probably should be not be passed out to all employees but a few key ones that will utilize it correctly. Here is a list of the things I rely on from my ipad:
-work email and files - I can type in excel, word, powerpoint, etc. through my organizations remote server.
-safety rounding - "Ultimate Checklist" is the app I bought ($1.99) and I have all hospital departments listed with all issues from safety roundings. Easy to follow up on too.
-note taking - many times as a facilitator, I put the final report together, I don't have to double document. This app came with the ipad "Notes"
-enter safety events - instead of writing it down or finding a computer, I can do that on my ipad instantly when I'm working with staff.
-all work done on wipe off boards and large paper for projects, I just take a picture instead of writing it all down so the next set of people can get in and use the meeting room (I used to schedule extra meeting room time to write everything down).
-activate and utilize our automated emergency preparedness plans (incident command stuff)
-when I do trainings or meetings that I need signature of attendance, I pass it around and have everyone sign. NO PAPER! I use the app "StenoPad Free"
Another app I've got is "Control Charts". It is a decision algorhythm to help you decide what kind of control chart you need to represent your data. But it doesn't do the graphs.
I've only had my ipad for a few months so I'm sure there is more out there that I haven't used yet but I've told my boss she would cripple me if she took it away. Trust me, I'm a "stick to the basics" Lean advocate but as a coordinator with so many hats to wear, this is MY efficiency tool.

It's interesting to see a hesitation to use electronic devices in the LEAN environment. Yes, for the majority of the activities it makes sense to use pencil and paper, but as a LEAN Coordinator, I'm finding valuable uses for my iPad.
1. Feeddler Pro - to read rss feeds and blogs. I can quickly search for topics similar to those I lead.
2. Google - helps me find almost anything I need on a topic (useful or not)
3. Adobe Acrobat Pro (PC version) - I seemed to be without a paper copy of an observation form or Gemba Walk form when I had a couple extra minutes to "walk" a department. So, I took the current MS Word template I had and via Adobe Acrobat I turned it into a fillable PDF form. Now when I have a couple minutes, I pull up the form on my iPad quickly populate the form with my observations and email directly to the appropriate manager or director. I now have an electronic copy of the form, eliminated the paper waste, and reduced delays in communicating LEAN information.
4. Email/Calendar - I can quickly check schedules, email traffic, tasks
5. Camera/Documentation - (Skitch) A picture is worth a thousand words and many times I'm walking through a department and see something unusual that I need to bring to someone's attention. I take a picture with my iPhone or iPad, but then have to figure a quick way to highlight, or point out what the issue is... maybe add a quick text box. With Skitch I can take a picture within the application and add a quick text box, arrow, box....etc... and email directly to the manager, co-worker....etc.... no more importing or exporting
6. Note Taking - (Livescribe) I scribble so many notes during the day it's almost impossible to keep track of them. With Livescribe's digital pen, I can write notes, record meeting conversation (with permission) and playback something I missed while I was busy drawing on the white board. I'm heading to Best Buy tonight to look at the wifi version of the pen so I wont have to plug the pen into my laptop to transfer notes.
7. Note Taking - (Evernote) One centralized location for all your information, synced between multiple devices with many application plug-ins designed to send captured information directly to Evernote. You can 5S your folder structure or use the application like your kitchen junk drawer, either way the application is pretty good about bringing back the correct documents when you do a search. Even better (no pun intended) if you transfer your Livescribe notes to Evernote, the Evernote servers will run them through an OCR process so you can search on your hand written notes as well. It works pretty good even with my sloppy writing.
8. Kindle - A good place to store reference books, PDFs, white papers...etc...etc... Try carrying around 20 paperback books on LEAN and Excel.
OK, just a few of my tools I use during the week. Being truly LEAN, I'm not trying to totally eliminate my need for pencil and paper, just reduce it where it makes sense.
Thanks for reading about my little LEAN corner of the world.

@Jim,
I don't have an iPad (yet), but we are using them in a pilot area here. We utilize them for Leader Standard Work (LSW) as well as a resource when on the gemba walks.
You might want to check into the app "Notability". We are able to use that app to take notes on a pdf - which is how we are doing LSW. Like you, we are finding that a resource is in-hand, rather than back at the office, and we are eliminating paper, but still keeping the record.
I have a personal Samsung Galaxy tablet, but Notability isn't available for the android platform... :( It is by far the best note app we've found. I'm hoping we can get one of our CI team to do a presentation on it next year...
