I'm interested in applying the LEAN concept to my interior architecture projects for my healthcare clients. I understand from the group that there is no actual "certification" but I am interested in not only studying the concept but also qualifying myself as a LEAN resource to current and potential clients.
Can I get direction on the best way to proceed?
Thank you!

I attended the Lean Certification program at University of Kentucky and it is outstanding, http://www.lean.uky.edu/. I believe they now have a session just for healthcare. I use the resources from that class often. I believe Purdue also has a good program, several of our hospitlas get their certificationi from there.

Good morning Melissa. I'd be happy to spend a couple minutes over the phone to explain how we are doing this routinely in healthcare. Let me know if you'd like to connect.

Melissa, I'm very glad to hear that you are interested in learning about Lean concepts for your projects. The first application that comes to mind is the waste of staff time (the end user) in extra cleaning of surface finishes, upholstery, and flooring materials that are beautiful to look at but are not appropriate for the continual sanitizing that occurs. I received Lean Healthcare certification at University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and there is another good program at Belmont University in Nashville. Good luck.

Melissa,
I would highly recommend that you contact your local affiliate of the American Society for Quality (ASQ). They are recognized throughout the country as a certification source. They also conduct training throughout the year, all over the country.

Melissa, you should look into resources available to members of The Lean Constuction Institute (LCI) - membership is very easonable see: www.leanconstruction.org One of the things they do is help set up "Communities of practice" - their members include designers (not just builders).
I also recommend you read the two following books (both available thorugh Amazon):
1. "Efficient Healthcare - Overcoming Broken Paradigms - A Manifesto" by David Chambers.
2. "The Toyota Way to Healthcare Excellence" by John Black
There are several Health and Construction Groups in the U.S. that are leaders in delivering lean healthcare design and construction projects (lots of free information available on Google and YouTube - search lean integrated project delivery and integrated project delivery). Our organization is currently developing a new hospital on a green field site and we will be adopting a new care delivery model "cellular care also known as multidisciplinary team care" that David Chambers describes in his book. Our organization has decided to adopt a form of lean integrated project delivery to design and build the new hospital (ironically the RFP to hire the Architecrual and Construction Team closes today, in about 2 hours actually).
I hope this helps you. Best wishes on your projects!

Melissa-
Glad you are interested in Lean. We've developed a "Green Belt Lean Certification for Facility Design" course based on demand from healthcare architects/designers like you. The next course is in Salt Lake City Feb 14-17. Click here for details on the course
We also have more resources on applying Lean to healthcare facility design, including a white paper, on our website. Click here for a link to our website
Feel free to contact me if you have further questions. Thanks,

Has anyone else completed this program?
Jean--Do you mind sharing the cost of the program? Also, could you elaborate on the quality of the program?
