Hello,
I work for a dental lab that has given me the opportunity to start applying lean concepts in our processes. This is a completly new area for me. And on top of that, I am still a technician-supervisor myself and have less time to put towards this endevor then I would like. I was wondering if anyone that has been in this kind of situation before would have any helpfull tips for me. I am working with a team of other supervisors, and we try to meet on a weekly basis. We have completed some smaller projects and are working on new ones, while at the same time educating ourselves along the way. We have been doing this for about a year and a half.
Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Jesse,

While I don't work in the field, or have any specific experience, I did want to let you know about some resources.

Dr. Sami Bahri runs a small dental practice in Florida and has been called the world's first lean dentist. He's done a great job of figuring out how concepts like changeover time and single piece flow can be applied in denistry. If you have a chance to see him speak, I would recommend it. And he did a free webinar with us that you can watch an archived version of at Follow the Learner webinar.

He does also have a book (full disclosure - we at LEI published it), and a new DVD (that I have not had a chance to watch yet) that is sold by GBMP.

Best of luck,
Jane

Jesse,

I worked in the field for over 7 years at one of the largest dental Labs in US. I was Operations Manager and Project Lead for Lean implementation at the lab. Would gladly share any insight I can with you. You can reach me at galvan.mark@gmail.com

Hi Jesse

A few suggestions, start by reading all the free simple info here at LEI, but there are other sites like ours elseinc.com Info Section, and ther are many others out there as well. Get the people under you actively involved, you are supposed to be a leader, that does not mean you do it yourself. The more you get others involved the more you will get done, and the less time you will spend away from your other duties.

Remember trues leaders assign those under them the duties to get things done, yoiu just oversee and direct. True success in lean comes when the people performing jobs drive their own job and performance improvement.

All the Best

Hi Jesse,
Bob Long at Whip-Mix has been teaching Lean to dental labs for a while-- I suggest you check with him. His team might even come to your lab and study yourspecific condition. I do not have any business relationship with them, I just think they're the right people!
You've been trying for a year and a half. With the right help, you would have been well on your way... I have done it on my own; it took 13 years. That was too long, in my opinion! It would've been much faster with a sensei (mentor/teacher.)
You could also email me at sami@bahridental.com and I'll do my best.
Main thing, don't give up, lean is the right thing for a lab.

Best of luck!

Sami

Hey Jesse, no worry... if you don't have much of ideal knowledge about lean and working with it for the very first time then I guess as Jane says webinar will be quite useful for you.

Also you can attain some of the fundamental workshops conducted by lean including on site training this will be useful for your work for sure!! I did same when I have to apply it in our clinic for dental implant procedure.

Hi Jesse,

Wow, you have the actual Lean Dentist offering his insight. I've never met Dr. Bahri personally, but I have attended a webinar and read "Follow the Learner". Take his invite and run with it!

In addition, Mark Graban has done a lot in the healthcare industry (disclosure, I've written an occasional blog for him and did some editing on his recent book). His two books are well worth the investment as well: Lean Hospitals and Healthcare Kaizen.

And always, ask questions! LEI's forums have a wealth of knowledge through experience!
