Hi all,

I am in the process of developing a Lean training session for senior managers in my organization. I would like to gear the session around "what the role of a manager" is in a lean organization. I have added material about the role of a lean manager is to coach and mentor, go see, make problems visible, and engaging everyone to solve problems.

I was wondering if anyone else has developed such a module that you would be willing to share or if you have some suggestions as to other material that may be relevant to add.

I saw a webinar by John Toussaint (spelling?) of ThedaCare a couple of years ago, addressing the role of leadership in their Lean Transformation. You may have to dig a bit, but the points raised were illuminating. One that sticks with me is that if your management is supporting the Lean journey, it will fail. They must DRIVE it!

" On the Mend" By John Toussaint M.d
and
"Creating A Lean Culture" by David Mann
we use both of these to teach our healthcare managment staff and I think they are excellent and balanced resources

Hi Justin,
I can't provide a training module, but I have some leads.
Michael Balle's book The Lean Manager blew me away. I had no idea how hard it was to do true lean management until I read this book.

Another source in Bob Emiliani's work on real lean. He's been a major contributor on lean management. I don't know the name of a specific book. But he has made real progress on operationalizing lean management, er, what does a lean manager actually do?

Karen Martin has a book comining out called The Outstanding Organization and it has some almost-novel high level thoughts about lean companies that I found refreshing and challenging. She's given presentations on her core ideas that might help you. Here's the links:

One of the most important comments that I have come across in lean training is to remind managers that they might be the last chance someone has to learn. If they give their employees the opportunity to learn and exercise their problem solving skills, it may open them up to more fulfilling opportunities instead of shutting them down and killing that growth before it starts. Powerful words of wisdom from my lean sensei. The other principle that is ignored is that leaders should be the servants of those they lead. They employees are the foundation of the house of lean.

When we did our "process owner" training these are the items we included:
What is Lean?
What is my role in the new lean environment?
What are the tools and capabilities I need to be successful?
Prepare an 'elevator speech'
Understand change management techniques
5S Activity
What is Standard Work and Why do we care?
Manager involvement in standard work and training new processes
Accountability for standard work
Leading Through Data and Metrics
Holding effective huddles and coaching others on effective huddles
Driving a performance driven culture

We also hold "Boot Camps" with the expectation that new "process owners" and executives attend to build a foundation of lean.
