Hello Friends,

I am a former owner of assisted living faciities in Florida intending to start another one but from the Lean perspective.. Lean fused with Eden Alternative and much more since the so called normal business model for ALFs is broken.. (Who gains more with the ruination of the health of ones clients ??) I would very much like to share my business 'situation' with those who could advise me..and in particular help me articulate the lean start up for ALFs picture I am painting for prospective clients and investors.

David,

I am the Director of Process Excellence (lean) in a hospital system, but I've been doing a little work with some of our extended care partners. So I'm interested in what you are doing as well as providing any input I might have as to your approach and direction.

As discussed in this forum, a standard, universally accepted definition of Lean apparently does't exist (Note that some might disagree with that statement), but instead, lean is anything a company or institution says it is or would like it to mean as it applies to themselves specifically. I would suggest therefor that the first thing you need to do is to define Lean as it applies to your company. What does your company need to do to be Lean by your definition of Lean.

What might be helpful in coming up with this description is to look at Eden Alternative's ten principles, and specifically the first principle, which is, "The three plagues of loneliness, helplessness, and boredom (LHB) account for the bulk of suffering among our Elders."

Your company obviously has solutions to relieving LHB for its elders, so decide how Lean tools and techniques can be used to to make those solutions more effective. In other words, how can you get more positive results faster and with less effort?
