Hi, I am interested in hearing from anyone who has used a lean office simulation game / tool, similar to the variety of lean simulation games available for the factory, encompassing lead time reduction, NVAT reduction (overprocessing), layout and flow, management of queues and workloads, kpi's etc....
If anyone can help, I have seen a couple of good examples but would like some advice before I proceed.

I have used a tool called Sigma Flow, which is a comprehensive toolset supporting both lean and Six Sigma concepts. With Sigma Flow, you can read in your Visio process flows, then describe process capabilities, such as queue time, process time, resources, costs, arrival rates, product variations (I used in mortgage banking, where different products required different steps or required more process time), incident rates, defect rates, etc.
The tool enables you to run simulations to validate that it models current state, then enables comparisons between as-is and proposed to-be as inputs to design before you go to implement.
The tools were surprisingly robust and surprisingly inexpensive (e.g. about $2k). Also contains statistical analysis and other tools.

I have used the "Little Blue Lego Airplane" demonstration
put out by Visionary Products for years in both the
manufacturing and service industries. Last year
they released an office demonstration as well called "Lean
Zone Office" ($635). I have used it several time and
think it's a very good resource. Both demos make course
development a snap (Lean Zone Office comes with a full Power Point
Presentation) and are very portable. They can be found
at http://www.visionaryproducts.biz/.

Joe, Can you please elaborate the simulation "Lean Zone

working in designing, engineering, marketing, etc. Thanks

Hello all,
The 5S Numbers game is a very cool first hand experience of the benefits of 5S that only takes 15 minutes. Not office specific AND the learning is instantly transferrable.
We created a very nice participant handout and facilitator's guide you can access at no charge here.

Have fun.

With the popularity and high number of requests for Lean games (office, pizza, airplane etc.) has consideration been given to having the moderator asking the person who has the game to make it available as a downloadable item from the forum?
The moderator could vet the games to make sure there is not a commercial promotion involved.
This would likely decrease the number of e-maills requesting the game.
Food for thought.

Boris,
I'm interested in tools that can be used with government. Comments made here lead me to believe that the tool you have might work in that environment. Government is always a tough nut to crack, but a good tool could open some eyes (as would a pry bar, but I don't think I can get by with using that one). Do you think your tool would work? If the tool works with order entry, there is a close parallel to many government processes/transactions.
If possible, I would like to see your tool to get a better understanding of the kinds of transactions it processes.
Thanks,
Joe

Hi,
When dealing with Local Authorities, creating something that is bespoke for them sometimes will enable far greater insight into how they work than a generic example from the outside.
I was heading an E2E review of waste collection, looking at it from both a customer perspective and a product perspective. To help the whole transformation team understand the issues, (Not all could go out and collect waste, or work in the call centre...) I created a waste collection game, based on the concept that the initial work was normal to the crew, then they cross-covered another crew, where they had far less awareness of 'normal' work, and the crews had slightly different customer service deliery concepts.... That is the public learned different ideas of what right looks like.
The briefing was its a cold wet day, you are wearing thick gloves, you can't carry a pencil and paper to make notes....
It was a great way to simulate going to the gemba.... The head of IT and head of the call centre gained 15 years insight (compared to their normal learning from work)
There is a case study at www.supportservicesdirect.co.uk called 'Rethinking waste.. ' which will illustrate how that fitted in.

I found a great free game suitable for lean office training. It is from the software community, but relevant as it illustrates the constraints in an office production line. Called the Pamphlet Game, it gets the group together to design brochures to promote a holiday resort by drawing and pasting graphics. It's available here:

As well, I am compiling a list of free Lean games available on different sites across the Internet. You can find my list at http://www.leansimulations.blogspot.com

Hi John,
I appreciate you notifying us about your list of free games at http://www.leansimulations.blogspot.com. I went to the site & found a few I wanted to review & watch the video. Anythoughts as to why I'm unable to get the video to appear? Could be a set up option of op system version on my part. just curious. I'm able to see a description and a spot where the video would appear to be.

Hi Loren,
Thanks for the visit to the site. I am constantly adding more games and videos. All the videos so far are from youtube.com, so they are just embedded from youtube into my blog. If there is a problem viewing, then it is probably on your end. Maybe your admin is blocking youtube. Thanks for the feedback, though. I will update the video pages to include a link to the youtube video so you can go there and watch it directly if there are problems.

Hi Mary Jean,
How did this game work for your team. I'm needing something for our office folks too. If it worked well, can you share any insight and the information/facilitation and slide for the game? Thanks!
