The practices of collaborative innovation and lean share the same foundation. Most significantly, the practices rest on the willingness and ability of the practitioners to observe -- to see. Having a strong sense of reality -- no illusions -- is a prerequisite for leadership.
My reflections on this topic follow. It's been on my mind of late with clients and in my reading of The Birth of Lean.

Doug, I'd like to add to your reflections with the following:
It's one thing to observe. It's another thing to understand what you are observing. To me, understanding falls into the category of Critical Thinking.
One Critical Thinking Definition
Critical Thinking includes the rigorous use of information, observation, experience, and logical reasoning to evaluate and analyze any situation needing clarification, understanding or resolution for the purpose of guiding one's beliefs, decisions, and actions.
