I am a Doctoral student very interested in the inclusion of people with disabilities in work and community life. I am interested in the intersection between lean thinking and disability inclusion.
Has this topic been addressed? Your thoughts on the topic?
Thank you in advance.

Hello Dan,
For the past 3 years, I've work as a Lean Leader with Oregon's Department of Human Services, which includes services to Seniors and People with Disabilities. We have had lean events around the administrative side of DD Community Housing, DD Contract Administration, and DD Children's Intensive In-Home Services. The introduction of Lean in government is still relatively new. While I'm unaware of any specific application of Lean to disability inclusion in Oregon, there are efforts to continually improve.

How wonderful to find another person interested in the use of Lean process analysis for people with disabilities. As a vocational evaluator and CRC, I have spent the last 5 years participating in Lean Six Sigma training and formulating my ideas around the use of Value Stream Mapping in the employment of individuals with disabilities. What I have concluded is that Value Stream Mapping has a significant coorelation to Job Analysis AND when you combine these two concepts jobs can be designed in both administrative, sales, marketing and manufacturing processes that can be done by individuals with disabilities. Having a clear work capacity defined then matching it to the steps in a value stream provides opportunity for job creation. Of course it depends on the awareness of the business and the abilities of the individuals with disabilites. I believe there is AND will be significant applicability of these concept, resulting in savings in the disability management systems in the near future. It can help with the Ticket to Work process, as well as job design for State Voc Rehab Programs, Workers Compensation, STD and LTD. I would love to continue this conversation. Thanks for the posting.
