Hello All,
I am a student preparing to write a dissertation on the topic: "Lean Energy: efficient generation, transmission and distribution of electricity" and a data collection as well. I would like to identify energy wastes/losses by examining the processes involved with generation, transmission, distribution and consumption and a bit confused at this stage about the methodology and theories to use. Can anyone kindly link me to sources where I can get similar studies where lean has be used pls.?
Many thanks
Ben

Ben,
You cannot change the laws of physics that describe line loss and other physical inefficiencies in generation, transmission and distribution. Look at the design of the didtribution network for redundency and efficiency in distances and voltages. But the real opportunities for lean in electric utilities are in the supply chains for fuel, chemicals, materials, and labor and in the MOR (maintenance, repairs and operations) of generation plants, transmission lines and substations, and distribution networks. Spend time with the maintenance and procurement people in a few large utilities; talk with warehouse staff to get an idea of their stocking levels vs. what they could do with contract supplies of critical, high cost items. I think you will find some best practices and some real opportunities to reduce costs. Just keep in mind the restrictions on electric generation: it ships instantly, there are mandatory spinning reserves, and it has to work wben the customer flips a switch.
