Hi,
Wondering if anyone can suggest some good resources (articles or books) that provide detailed information on the process of designing an office layout to best utilize space and people and that supports the most efficient flow of information, people, etc.
We are a government org. that will be moving into a new space in about 16 months...space is wide open, so we were wanting to look into the idea of reviewing our workflows to make them more efficient and then design a Lean space to support that.
I have had a quick poke around, but have been unable to find anything that is not high level.
Any suggestions??

Jesse,
Setting up an offce area really isn't much different from a manufacturing area. You are on the right track in thinking of space utililization, flow, etc.
My suggestion would be to use cardboard cut-outs (to scale) that replicate your work stations. You can then easily move them around and simulate U shaped cells, straight line cells, etc.
You will also need to think about one piece flow and pull, both with paper and electronic communication.

This Univerisyt of Cincinnati web site provides design guidenance for office space in universities, and in addition, has a large bibliography of additional references that you might find helpfull. Their information is applicable to other industries.

Depending on how much information you have about the workflows, and whether you wish to move to a team-based culture or remain in a functional organization, I could advise you on literature. Check out www.strategosinc.com and the Facilities Planning book by James Tompkins et al. If you could give me details on which workflows touch which people (or departments), then maybe my own methods would apply too. Let me know if I can help further.

Hi,
I would probably encourage you to map your current state in your current office, including a spaghetti diagram etc, then from that do a blue sky 'if we had a new office' what would it look like to optimise the flow, remove the waste etc. As without knowing your processes it is difficult to advise anything more,

Hi Jesse,
I think "The Systematic Layout Planning " by Muther, (1973) is a very useful book about layout planning. You can also refer "The role of the physical layout in the implementation of lean management initiatives" (International Journal of Lean Six Sigma (2011) (Vol. 2 No. 3) by Soriano-Meier et al.

I think recently, I've been really into designing my office space to promote mental and emotional health as well as my physical health! I love these stories of offices catering to their workers. Recently, I know there has also been a lot of changes to comfortable and health-beneficial chairs in work spaces as well along with making it space efficient. It's so great!
