A user can send a private message to another user in one of two ways. If a user is viewing a topic and wishes to send a message to a user that has posted a message, he/she can quickly do that by clicking on the "Send Private Message" icon, which is located at the top right of the post (it looks like the head and shoulders of a person with a speech bubble). The "Send Private Message" window will be displayed for the user to enter the body of the message. After entering the message, click on the "Send Private Message" button to send the message to the intended recipient. Required fields are marked with an asterisk.

Alternatively, a user can access his Private Messages Center by clicking on the "Private Messages" link that appears in the left-hand side navigation bar. In the Private Messages Center, the user will be able to send to another forum user in the community by entering the user name in the "Send Private Message" field and clicking on the Send button. The Send Private Message window will appear for the user to enter his/her message. Click on the button at the bottom of the window to send it.

LEI Forums Ground Rules
Updated February 4, 2011

1. All postings are reviewed prior to being approved and appearing on the site.
Out of respect for our participants' time, non-productive and off-topic discussion will not be posted. Well-constructed on-topic postings may take up to two business days to appear. All well-reasoned perspectives on any relevant topic are welcome.

2. No topic that includes soliciting, advertising, or promotion will be posted.
This includes (but is not limited to) postings for job openings or advertising for a job; consultants seeking clients or clients seeking consultants; promoting your company's services, a book, website, blog, or webinar outside of the main topic of discussion in a thread. This applies regardless of whether the service or site being promoted is free or not.

3. Please clearly indicate any affiliations or conflicts of interest with any sites you link to or resources you recommend.
Remember that off-topic promotion is not allowed. However we recognize that in some cases, a participant may ask for a resource, and you may have a resource that you are directly affiliated with. In such cases, you may post about this resource, but make sure to correctly identify anything that may be seen as a conflict of interest. As examples: if you link to your own site (or your company's site) please make that explicit, If you are recommending a book you are the author of, please be forthright about that.

4. All postings automatically include your Forums User Name as well as your first and last name.
Your User Name is added automatically to your postings based on the name you created when signing up for the Forums. To change it, use the Home tab drop-down menu, log in (or update member info) and go to the Forums information section (in yellow). If you didn't create a User Name, a numerical identity is automatically generated for you.

5. No personal criticisms of companies, employers, or co-workers will be posted.
At the same time, you are welcome to make a well-informed critique of a company's lean efforts.

5. Please write clear titles for your posts so users know what they are about at a glance.

6. When a discussion is only interesting to a small private group or individuals, use private messaging.

7. You can add an attachment up to 100k to a post.
We encourage the sharing of value-stream maps and other documents. If attachments are larger than 100k, contact the Forums moderator at moderator@lean.org to have the document added to the LEI web site.

If you are having trouble attaching a document, please see the thread in Forums FAQ section on how to upload a document.

Dear Forum Users,

As it seems some people have had trouble lately figuring out how to attach items to their posts, I am offering this quick overview.

If you ever have trouble attaching an item, feel free to e-mail me at moderator@lean.org for assistance.

When composing a message, click on the "Attach Files(s)" box at the bottom of the composing window. That will open an additional smaller window just for attachng the file.

Then you have to upload the file to your account: Click on the "Browse" button to browse for the file you want to attach (this opens another window, but it should be a familiar process). Select the file and hit "open" to select the file you want to attach. Once the file is selected, you still have to hit "Upload File" button in upper-right corner of the attach file window.

After you have uploaded the file to your account, the file should appear in the middle of the attach file window under the list of all files you have uploaded to your account. You still need to actually attach it to the message though.

To attach the file to your specific message, select the file name from the area in the middle of the window called "File Listing for [username]". Then hit the "Attach File" link in the botttom right hand corner of the window - that attaches your file to your post.

After that, the extra attach file window should close and you should be back to composing window.

Regards,
Jane

When posting, some Forum users have reported
trouble with the java application that runs with the
text editor that appears in the message window. Most of the
problems were caused by older versions of browsers or operating
systems. However, some were caused by security conflicts with
users' computers.

If you get a security popup window about
trusting the "signed applet" being loaded, select
the "Always" button at the bottom. This will stop the
window from reappearing.

One of the features we liked about this forum software is that it
used java, which made the wysiwyg (what you see is what you get)
editor compatible with both IE and Firefox browsers.

However, some users were uncomfortable about loading an applet. So,
we've added a simple way to turn off java. On the home tab at the
top of this web page, go to Update Member Info. Scroll down to the
yellow highlighted area. Select the Disable Java button. That will
prevent the applet from loading and correct any associated
problems but will take away from the reply window some
functionality, such as spell check.
