Hello,

Currently I'm working on a thesis for the Dutch Delft University of Technology (faculty System Engineering, Policy Analysis and Management). Part of the thesis is to get more insights in the use of Lean Concepts (Tooling, Methods) in an 'IT Service Industry Environment'. I would like to use the Delphi Method to reach the 'experts' on this field. Through an Electronic Survey the experience/results, in using these Lean Concepts, with IT Service Industry Environment, will be collected. After analyzing this information I would gladly like to share the results with participants of the questionnaire.
The profile of the Lean expert is defined as:
-	Lean (Six Sigma) Black Belt
-	More than 3 years experience in using Lean concepts
-	Experience in using Lean concepts in an IT Service Industry environment
-	Preferable also experience with change management programs
The Delphi survey consists of three rounds. The first two rounds are traditional Delphi rounds in which questionnaires to gather and exchange information between individual respondents is used. Round one researches critical success factors and the contribution of the use of Lean Concepts to reach specific business goals in an IT Service Industry environment. Round 2 focuses on personal attributes and allows respondents to give feedback on or revise results from the first round. The third round consists of a workshop (remote/electronic) with all respondents to discuss results from the first two rounds and allows participants to give feedback on round 2 results. After the third round we conclude on the results for which there is a sufficient level of consensus among participants. For our research we define a sufficient level of consensus on the success factors of our framework if:

First step now is to make an inventory who is willing to participate in this Delpi Survey. Filling in the questionnaire will take around 10 minutes (first round).
If you are interested, please let me know. You can reach me via this site (Lean.org/Community) or e-mail. My e-mail address is: S.Rakhan@student.tudelft.nl.
As it is an Electronic Survey it will be needed to share contact details (mail address for sure, phone number can also be useful, but is not essential).
I am looking forward to your reply. Many thanks in advance.
Kind regards,

Questions on value stream mapping in service scenarios

Good evening Everyone!
I have some questions about applying value stream mapping (VSM) to a service scenario where there is a lot of variable time requirements from a customer.

The specific product I am referring to is a consulting service delivery. The resources or materials in this case are people with specific knowledge. The lead time we request from customers is several weeks for multiple steps to take place including assigning resources to the service. Some requests are made two months in advance based on project timelines, others as early as one day's notice (based on criticality, late realization of the need, etc). Two issues that impact us/our customers the most are:

1. By the time 1 day before the services comes around, the appropriate resources are likely already assigned to other services. We either cannot deliver the late request, or have to pull resources from another service(s) to fill the new request. Either one of these results would end up in at least one unhappy customer.

2. To handle late services we have to stop working on those that are on time to investigate whether the late request can be filled and deal with political fallout (a partial reason for long lead time).

In a non service driven market, like apparel and footwear, some companies use what they call an allocation run (software job) to deal with this. This job says allocate the top customers (ex. Major Department Store) with the product they ordered before the lower volume/total value customers (ex. Mom & Pop Shop), and if we run out of product, we will fill the remaining quantities of the "less important" orders later. In my particular example, this cannot be done so easily because not providing the service could have a major impact on the customer's project or entire business. Both services and manufacturers could face the same issue.

As this is the case and we are dealing with a volume of service deliveries each week, it is difficult to do a VSM for one customer. They all have similar varying needs; sometimes the needs of one customer clash with another.

When you do your VSM, the process steps remain the same. However, the information flow from the customer and timings change. Should this be accounted for in the VSM? If so, how can this be accounted for in the VSM diagram?

Thanks,
Geoff

Hello fellow lean practitioners,

Does anyone have experience taking the exam of the SME lean certification outside the U.S?

I live in the Netherlands and I'm having trouble finding a proctor for my exam. The procedure surrounding this is a bit 'strange' for me as well. You can take the exam individually, but you need a proctor to supervise. According to the website it can be many people.

Your exam proctor can be your manager, supervisor, Human Resources representative, a key administrator; a member of an SME chapter, ASQ section or AME region; a local college/university, library, or an authorized facilitator at an upcoming face-to-face review program.

I sent an e-mail to SME regarding my issue, and they suggested to check in at my local library, but they didn't know what I was talking about. My local library, very friendly people, suggested me to e-mail the details and they would inform their contacts about my issue, but I'm guessing this might take a while, or even will not result in anything satisfactory. Therefore I'm addressing my issue in the LEI forum, which I often use for information.

I hope someone can contribute this piece of information to the forum and improve it.. :-) ...and consequently help me.

So if anyone has experience regarding my issue, or if someone can tell me a bit more about the proctor-procedure, they're very much obliged.

Thanks in advance!
