In mid-June 2012, Tyler, TX, claimed it had saved more than $2.4 million in hard and "soft" savings through a lean-six sigma effort that it bfegan in 2009. The city also claimed to be one of only a few cities in the nation to implement a lean-sigma program throughout the entire municipal government. Completed projects include the reduction of vehicle part inventory, the management of chemical usage at the water treatment plants, cutback of overtime, and improving how garbage is collected. City officials credited employee engagement strategies and internal cvommunications for the program's success.
