Most value streams are long and complex, running through multiple functions in your company, as well as through supplier and customer companies. But unless everyone whose actions affect the value stream, sees and agrees on the actual condition of the value stream, sustainable improvement is difficult.
"Therefore, those touching the value stream need to take a walk in order to see and grasp the condition of the value stream," said Jim Womack, LEI founder and senior advisor, during a special keynote at our recent Lean Transformation Summit. "But you can't just see. You have to see, talk, and agree or you have no basis for action."
During his presentation, which we just posted, Jim described the nuts and bolts of how to take a walk -- a gemba walk -- including the what, why, how, who, and when of gemba walking.
