All Problem Solvers Must...?

We always love to hear your thoughts on lean thinking today, especially when it comes to planning the Lean Transformation Summit every year. That's why we recently sent out a survey to our summit attendees, asking them for their thoughts and opinions. One of the questions we were most excited to hear your answers to was "Complete this sentence: All problem solvers must..." We received some very intriguing answers, and wanted to share the top eight here with you. So, what must all problem solvers do, according to you? All problem solvers must...

  1. ...be structured, open minded and involve the right people.
  2. ...Plan, Do, Check, Act.
  3. ...partipate/engage/have a coach.
  4. ...love the problem first.
  5. ...go and see.
  6. ...follow through and continue to PDCA.
  7. ...be effective at leading collaborative groups.
  8. ...understand the problem.

I'd add:

Don't jump to solutions

Don't assume you've found a "root cause" without testing that hypothesis in practice

Don't be afraid to "Adjust" - if you want to think of the A as "Adopt, Adapt, or Abandon"

Be Change Management Agents - coaching and instructing in the concepts of Kubler-Ross and Kotter (and many others). Every solution to every problem involves change in something. Whatever the approach to change management, respecting where the people are today and guiding them through the emotional side to change is essential to long term sustainability of not only the solution to the problem, but to the Lean process within the organization.  Focusing merely on the tactical and technical side will lead to mistrust in the Lean process and those facilitating these changes.

- persistent

- have data on the problem or know where/how to get it

Be ready to discover, challenge and probably change your own mental models. 

Go and see by yourself on the gemba until you see something you didn't know.  

Remove obstacles.

Be ready to learn.
