Cambridge, MA-Based Lean Enterprise Institute Announces 2 In-Depth Workshops for Creating and Sustaining Continuous Improvement Cultures
The nonprofit Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI) today announced it will host two comprehensive workshops to help executives and managers launch and sustain the corporate cultures needed for lean management transformations.
Both training sessions will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at LEI’s office, 215 First St., Cambridge, MA. The sessions are:
- Value-Stream Mapping: a Methodology for Sustainable System Improvement, set for October 14-15, 2014, will help managers, supervisors, lean management coordinators, and change agents understand every step of the value-stream improvement process from preparation, to current-state mapping, to mapping, implementing, and sustaining a leaner future state.
- Improvement Kata - Coaching Kata, set for October 28-30, 2014, will show managers, executives, human resource professionals, lean specialists, and consultants how “kata” – a martial arts term for systematic patterns of thought and action – help leaders and their teams improve methodically every day by applying the scientific routine of Plan-Do-Check-Act to any goal, currently beyond reach.

What is Lean?
The terms lean production, lean manufacturing -- or more correctly lean management -- refer to a complete business system for organizing and managing product development, operations, suppliers, customer relations, and the overall enterprise that requires less human effort, less space, less capital, less material, and less time to make products with fewer defects to precise customer desires, compared with traditional management.
Toyota pioneered lean management as a complete business system after World War II. During the late 1980s, a research team headed by James P. Womack, PhD., at MIT’s International Motor Vehicle Program coined the term “lean” to describe Toyota’s system.
