Mapping your Work, Navigating Life: Personal Kanban (1 Day Class)

An immersive one-day experience in Lean for the Office.

Internal politics. Unnecessary meetings. Lousy information flow. Poor decision-making. All of these culminate in an unpleasant - and let’s face it, farcical - annual review for the office worker.

All knowledge work is subjected to extremely high levels of variation, stress, and changing demands. And yet the modern office rarely has an agreed-upon way of working to handle these conditions. We assume processes need to be heavy or filled with jargon or additional work.  But process is actually how we agree to work together. In its absence, we are hard pressed to get anything done at all.

In this one-day immersive experience we will explore the impact of overload on both the individual and the team; politics and "work-arounds" that start quietly and quickly morph into unwritten rules; and smooth work-, information-, and communication-flows that can lead to happier, less stressed, and more effective teams.

Upon completion of this workshop and the system it introduces, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply techniques to help coworkers arrive at consensus
  2. Manage projects and day-to-day work easier through visual tracking
  3. Hold better (and fewer) meetings through new skills for visualizing the work
  4. Plan work both tactically and strategically
  5. Comprehend and distinguish the dynamics of their teams, including how the team as a whole works together

Yes, that is a lot. This immersive class will be intense, but so is the average day of a knowledge worker.

Fair warning: we will use Act-and-Reflect teaching in parts of this class. You will be given instructions, act on them, and learn through the reflection. Just like real life, some activities come with a pre-amble and some do not.
