Lean: The Best Medicine - Wisconsin Health Care System Transforms Using Lean Strategies

Madison, Adam
4/19/2012

The online edition of AME’s Target magazine examines the continuing lean healthcare journey at ThedaCare as described in two books by Dr. John Toussaint, former CEO of the Wisconsin healthcare system. The latest, Potent Medicine, proposed practical ideas for transforming America’s healthcare system, based on three principles:

  • Redesign care using lean methods to focus on value for the patient
  • Give consumers the information they need to make the best decisions on their healthcare
  • Pay doctors and hospitals for good outcomes, including prevention, rather than procedures

The first book, Shingo-Prize winner On the Mend, co-written with Roger A. Gerard, PhD, describes the triumphs and stumbles of the seven-year journey to transform the five-hospital healthcare system.
