Special Sessions to Kick off the VLX

Lean Past, Present, and Future 

VLX Talking PointsIn the kick-off set of sessions, you'll learn from four lean pioneers and gain perspective about lean's evolution – with an emphasis on what's ahead. 


Good Coach, Bad Coach

Presenters: John Shook, Senior Advisor, LEI; Scott HeydonSenior Lean Coach, LEI; Josh Howell, President, LEI; and Eric Ethington, Coach and Program Manager of the Lean Product and Process Development (LPPD) Initiative 

Learn how to prepare and coach someone in the A3 management process from the person who wrote the book on it. In live and recorded demonstrations scheduled throughout the ten weeks, you'll see how LEI Senior Advisor John Shook, author of Managing to Learn, coaches LEI Senior Lean Coach Scott Heydon, as he works through an A3, trying to address a difficult challenge. Then see how it's not done, as Senior Coach Eric Ethington demonstrates the coaching approaches to avoid. At the same time, watch how Heydon serves as the A3 mentor for his mentee, LEI President Josh Howell.  

Following each of these unforgettable – and based on an actual case – series of presentations, the three will open the "floor" for further discussion and Q&A to stress the critical elements of A3 coaching.  

During the middle of the week, John, Scott, Josh, Eric, and other coaches will join the networking, helping to coach attendees through their "Go-Do" challenges -- and advising attendees as they complete the A3s they're currently completing.

On the heels of successfully implementing "blue-light scanning" into GEA's "engineering factory," Dave will share what he learned. In his presentation, he'll share insights into the change management process and how to effectively introduce new technologies that fundamentally change how people do their work.

Learn how lean thinking helped the Lynn Community Health Center (LCHC) to quickly and dramatically increase productivity as demand for its services soared. Kimberly Eng and Dr. Kiame Mahaniah share the strategies they used to lead the community health center as it grew 50% in a few years. Critical to their success, they say, is that they enabled the frontline caregivers -- the medical directors and other clinicians -- to manage their work themselves.

He also will challenge you to share your stories -- the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Knowledge Gap Analysis: The Foundation for Successful Program Kick-off

Natalie Reed will explore the concept of Knowledge Gap Analysis as a social and technical tool to use to align the core team at the start of a program. Her presentation will demonstrate how you can build a clear and shared understanding of scope, time, and cost by sequencing and prioritizing gaps in knowledge and starting work on the biggest risks and most critical tasks first.

As a leader, you must establish the proper culture and environment to foster a robust lean implementation. In this session, Carlos Vallejo, who led Costco Optical Lab's lean cultural transformation, will identify the habits of a lean leader, which will enable you to:

  • Create a sense of urgency and purpose 
  • Introduce standards and ensure adherence to them? 
  • Establish priorities

Presenter: Carlos Frederico Pinto, M.D. (aka Dr. Fred); CEO; Instituto de Oncologia do Vale (IOV)  

Carlos Frederico Pinto, MD, known as "Dr. Fred," will share how the Instituto de Oncologia do Vale (IOV) team has improved its own work and is helping to "reduce the cancer burden among us all" in the Sao Jose dos Campos Metro area, 60 miles from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

For 10 years, Herman Miller has systematically developed over 350 Group Leaders and Team Leaders in its ongoing journey to build a Toyota Production System (TPS) management system across global operations. Jill Miller and Chris Shier will share how the partnership between Operations, Human Resources, and the Continuous Improvement Herman Miller Production System (HMPS) teams was fundamental to building a structured program based on the practical application of both TPS and leadership skills.
