Designing and Building a Lean Culture
How do you create an “instant” organization that works as an integrated team employing lean practices?
Swiftly aligning engaged teams on large projects is a necessary challenge in the building industry. The design of a complex half-million square foot hospital expansion requires the efforts of several hundred people from dozens of disciplines including healthcare professionals, medical planners, project executives and managers, architects, engineers, trade contractors, estimators, and others.
In this session, you will learn how a team approaches this challenge during the design of the Oregon Science and Health University Hospital Expansion Project in Portland. We will explore the following topics:
- Courage and Connection: How the team organized as “a team of teams” in a framework of shared leadership that encourages all team members to contribute fully to architectural design and construction planning;
- Purpose: The importance of focusing on the important mission of the project and the personal meaning the project has for each of the team members;
- Challenge: To leverage the expertise in a large multidisciplinary team to continually provide options and updates utilizing new tools to identify the best value for the project;
- Commitment: The importance of investing in relationships and how leveraging lean tools can help facilitate shared responsibility, transparency, and a culture of accountability.
