Isolated Islands

A poor arrangement of work flow so people are not in a position to help each other; they are isolated islands. The term also can refer to processes outside of a cell or assembly line that run independently to their own rhythm instead of to customer demand. Such islands typically contain a lot of waste, such as excess inventory.
