Michael Ballé, PhD, is a lean management practitioner, business writer, and author. His most recent book, co-authored with father Freddy Ballé, is Lead With Respect: A Novel of Lean Practice, published by the Lean Enterprise Institute.
They're co-authors of two earlier Shingo Research Award-winning business novels about lean management. The Gold Mine tells how lean concepts turn around a failing plant. Having had the benefit of working with some of the original sensei that worked with American companies in the early 1990s, I have experienced first hand both the frustration and satisfaction that brings. As the authors describe, the true sensei, unlike a consultant, never gives you the “answer”, but always prods you to discovering it on your own by more deeply understanding the problem and its causes.
The demands placed on leaders for fast results has pushed them to seek a quick fix by hiring consultants to give quick solutions to their problems. Satisfying in the short run but frustrating in the long run because the “solutions” don’t stick due to a lack of appropriateness or ownership. Sensei lead you to solutions by constantly asking questions which make our brains hurt (frustrating), but put us on the satisfying path of truly understanding our unique problems and improve our ability to solve them.
