Every factory needs a value stream map – even Santa's

Ever wondered how Santa delivers all those toys to every child in the world in just one night? “Magic,” we were were always told. But what we were never told was that jolly old St. Nicholas also runs an exceptionally lean operation up at the North Pole.

Take a look at this clever VSM, drawn by Jordan S. Kempler of TMAC in Texas. Every gift starts at the North Pole Toy Supply Depot and makes its way through Receiving and the rest of the value stream before ending up in homes around the world. And don't forget the coal for the naughty list - that's on here too.

Yes, there’s a bit of magic involved. But just look at that takt time! Does anyone know if Santa does private consulting during the off-season?

Editor's Note: Lean Enterprise Institute is taking its annual holiday break from December 24 to January 3. The Lean Post will be dormant until January 4, when we'll kick off another year of insightful lean learnings. See you in 2016, and Happy Holidays from all of us at LEI!

Hey! Quite interesting, but this isn't a lean way to run Santa's workshop. The first problem is that it isn't customer focused. The lead time is too long from order receipt until delivery. According to this value stream, I won't even get a lump of coal next Christmas :(

Dear Santa, I would suggest that you create a supermarket of assembled toys ready for packaging and go through your elves' magic book, fix the spells and eliminate rework.
