From Data to Decision: Analyzing Value-Stream Metrics (1 Day Class)

Mapping out the value stream is an effective first step in hunting down process waste and inefficiency – but the numbers behind the scenes matter, too. Completing the journey from value-stream map to a set of effective countermeasures requires the collection and analysis of data for key metrics across the value stream, which ultimately can paint a detailed picture of the process and offer clues to improvement. In this session, attendees dive into the fictional world of “Pete’s Pizza” restaurant, assuming the role of a consultant tasked with turning the shop around and answering two crucial questions: 1) When do I need data? and 2) How much data do I need?

In this full-day workshop, attendees will:

  • Map out the value stream of the production and delivery process at Pete’s Pizza
  • Draw on survey data to identify key metrics across the value stream, including lead time, quality and cost
  • Analyze and interpret the data to develop a formal problem statement
  • Develop a set of recommendations for the client based on the data analysis

By taking this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify key value stream metrics and effectively connect them to the broader mapping process
  • Develop a stronger understanding of data collection and descriptive statistics
  • Leverage data to develop business processes that better connect to the voice of the customer

This session is recommended for beginner- to intermediate-level value-stream mappers seeking to develop a better understanding of the role of data collection in the process. Excel-based activities include building pivot tables, designing graphs of key processes and creating descriptive statistics.

This session is being offered in partnership with the Center for Operational Excellence, The Ohio State University.
