1. Planet Lean profiles James Hereford, a charismatic lean COO at this third healthcare transformation

In the first installment of PL’s new series profiling great lean leaders, Roberto Priolo profiles James Hereford, a former high school teacher turned-healthcare executive leading his third lean transformation. His tips on lean leadership are as interesting as his journey from school to hospital. Read more.

2. Pierre Pezziardi is using lean startup principles to redesign the service provided to citizens

There is a need for lean thinking in every industry – including the government. It may not have become mainstream just yet, but people like Pierre Pezziardi understand its potential. Check out how Pierre is trying to bring lean innovation to the French government – his approach isn’t much different than what you’d see in the private sector!

3. Improving breast cancer care using a dedicated care path in a hospital in Brazil

“The distance to travel and the waiting time represented a tragic combination for our patients, who not only had to endure a long and strenuous journey, but also delays and cancellations,” write Evelin Marotta, Sheila Vianna Rais & Stela Maris Coelho, all of Brazil’s Hospital Regional do Vale do Paraiba (HRVP). “For example, a breast cancer patient could see a doctor on a Tuesday and have an exam scheduled for a Wednesday, but this would still require travelling two days in a row.”

Unwilling to let their patients go through this, the HRVP staff underwent a lean transformation to improve their patients’ care. Their solution drastically reduced patient wait times – all without adding a dime to their existing budget. Read more to find out how they did it. Can you implement any parts of their strategy at your organization?
